Take Care and Spread the Word Too

Today the obituary section had me staring at a familiar name of an institution but an unfamiliar face in the section.

My alma mater had lost a young teacher. As a doctor loss of young lives has a very deep impact on me, especially if the cause of deaths were accidents or preventable and controllable illness.

Thus it highlights our need to educate the people on need for safe driving or prevention of other accidents either on road or off it.

Accidents at home, streets and workplace need to be worked on in a systematic way and peevented.

Occupational accidents can be prevented by coordination between the employers and employees. Use of screens, supporting structures, warning signs etc.,education and training of workers and proper use of PPE by them.

Road accidents can be prevented by having good pothole free roads, mirrors at blind turns, speed limits and following traffic rules and driver education.

We need to identify possible accident areas in and around our homes and get them rectified.

Also, we should create a robust system of preventive health checkups, so that every individual is motivated enough to  to undergo them regularly so that early detection of disease like cancer, diabetes and hypertension can be conducted and steps taken to control them.

People should be motivated to adopt moderate exercise and healthy eating habits. We like our food salty and tea sweet, but gradually decreasing it’s content in our diet will go a along way towards control of preventable illnesses.

It pains me to see people coming in end stages of disease like breast cancer when much could be done at the first indication of swelling.

All the above measures sound ideal and easy but changing a person’s behaviour is one of the most challenging tasks. Thus, we as people of this generation with advanced technology at our disposal can do our bit in creating awareness in our community.

We can help by writing, talking, creating reels etc on such topics or atleast sharing information that will benefit others.  You never know this small selfless act of yours could benefit millions.

As far as death is concerned there are a number of things beyond our control, but acting on the things we can control does go a long way in prolonging and leading a fruitful life.

Scour the news for an entirely uninteresting story. Consider how it connects to your life. Write about that.
