Our body is composed of various organ systems. These run in a specific cycle based on our activities. Example: The heart rate, the respiratory rate, the ovarian cycle are few examples of the cyclical nature of our body.
Another important cycle that affects us is the circadian rhythm. Most of our body activities are based on this. It is also known as the biological clock. It controls the sleep wake cycle which is the reason why we sleep at night and wake up in the morning. This cycle also affects various body functions like metabolism, hormonal secretion, body temperature, digestion etc.
Why is this cycle important?
Disturbance in the circadiam rhythm of the body is believed to lead to various disorders like sleep disturbance, diabetes, obesity, mental issues etc.
Lack of adequate sleep also leads to decreased reflexes, reaction time making it hard to focus leading to accidents at workplace, home and the roads. Further, it can cause anxiety, mood swings and depression. Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases etc.
How can the circadian rhythm be affected?
This rhythm is based on darkness and light.
Lack of regular sleep routine, use of screens and devices during bedtime, working at night etc can affect the circadian rhythm.
How can we maintain our circadian rhythm?
Maintain a regular sleep wake cycle
Avoid using screens and devices before going to sleep
Adequate rotation of shift duties
Daily exercise
It is necessary for us to prioritize our health by way of good habits and routines. As a healthy body is able to perform tasks more effectively.
