The long distance Saga

Staying away from loved ones is a challenge.  I have at times been in a long distance relationship with my husband during his various transfers and also been with him during his postings away from friends and family.

Thus, how much ever far we may travel we carry a bit of our home with us. Although long distances lead to greater independence and understanding of the world and appreciation of occasional visits, it also leads to constant stress and worry for the family member who is away. Among couples it can lead to sadness, lonliness, feeling of being left out, jealousy or depression and can cause a strain in the relationship.

In such situations it is imperative to communicate with each other on a daily basis.  Embrace the blessing of technology and spend quality time with each other via video calls and long distance calls available to us in this era. Avoid jealousy instead embrace trust and confidence in the relationship.

In Bharat, there was always a tradition of getting married early and the custom of monogamous relationships.  It would make the couple more trusting and develop a bond of friendship within themselves. As they knew each other from their growing up years they understood each other very well. Very few people crossed the barriers of marriage and wondered into extra marital relationships.  Even when the husband was working or studying abroad the mutual trust survived beyond borders even in the absence of technologies like telephones. The only mode of communication were letters that took months to arrive.

If people in those times could cope with the stress and challenges of long distances we the modern generation can very well do so. Hence, embrace the change and trust yourself  and distance will just become beautiful memories.

Share a story about the furthest you’ve ever traveled from home.
