What major historical events do you remember?

Histories are painful and have a legacy etched in the hearts of the people forever. One such legacy is the invasion of India. India was invaded around 200 times by many rulers including the Mughals,Mongols,Britain, Portuguese and Dutch.

This great flourishing country was pushed into poverty and slavery from which it is still recovering. The scars of the invasions run very deep. The change of the customs and adaptation mechanism especially with regards to protection of women became a norm which led to torture of women evident in the practice of purdah system, jouhar,Sati etc. A country where women were on par with men in education including war skills had reduced women to the weaker sex needing protection.

A country that was rich in all aspects including wealth, education and spirituality was looted repeatedly by foreign invasions. The people of the country suffered loot, rape, killings, conversions and torture at the hands of the brutal forces. Temples and prestigious educational institutions have been burnt and destroyed.

A country where the flexible and practical Varna system was exploited into the rigid caste system. Where once there were kings from every Varna, the caste system divided the country and unpardonable atrocities were committed against the lower categories.

I could go on as every painful act and crime committed on the citizens of my country is still a open sore trying to heal. However inspite of the atrocities the country has never attacked any region, but have always upheld the notion of peace and unity.

And now, after being molested and divided and sub divided based on region, religion and caste, at 77 years of independence, we are picking up the remnants of the carnage and aspiring to the golden age of the past.

History maybe painful but lessons learnt should never be forgotten and building a foundation of tomorrow with learnings from yester years is a cornerstone for great aspirations and transformation.
