Of God and Godmen

What’s a topic or issue about which you’ve changed your mind?

In my growing up years I was a firm beliver of God being a higher power. well refined and way beyond the reach of common man.

But all this changed when I stumbled upon ” the autobiography of an yogi “by Paramhansa Yogananda. I realised that my thinking is just limited to what knowledge I have read or heard about. But this book gave narrations of events which left me dumbfounded. It made me wonder how can these events be true? Is there something that my narrow minded mind is missing? Do I need to broaden my horizons and look beyond? Do I need to fact check my knowledge and assumptions??

And thus began a journey of research into God men and the saints of the past. It was interesting to note that none of these people ever declared themselves to be gods! They may have called themselves messengers or mediums through which God can be realised but never proclaimed to be God’s themselves.

But my real transformation occurred on meeting my guru.  That is when I realised that God is not a higher presence but a highly subtle energy in all living beings and nature. It is not something that is refined and beyond reach… it is something right here with each one of us … all we need to do is open our minds and be receptive to it. Feel the creation in all its splendor.  Be it a tree, stone, animal or a human being. Just be perceptive to their being.

And having said this it is sad that humans have to learn to be in tune with nature. Whereas all animals, trees and birds are well attuned. They are well aware when a calamity will strike, when they may be hunted and also know when it’s time to die. However  we humans are lost in our grandeur.  Relying more on proofs than reality and on words rather than feelings and on intellect than instinct.

It’s high time we dwell deep within ourselves and find the connection to the almighty.  And a true  guru is the  one who can show the way. And hence he has followers without asking and he is considered  equivalent to God without saying … and provides you insights without trying.

And although all of this may appear non sensical to many, only those who have experienced it will understand what I mean. It may not be your turn yet, but whenever it comes it will definitely put all your doubts of God and God men to rest.
