You close the doors and windows to shut out the noise outside. You turn down the fan and use silent gadgets to reduce the sound indoors. But what do you do to silence the forever noisy mind? How do you stop its chatter? How do you handle overthinking?

Yoga Vashistha the ancient Indian scripture compares the restlessness of the mind to a monkey jumping about in the forest. The monkey mind that Swings from one thought to another and yet another. You start with something you desire but end up with thoughts that were never the destination.

This continued array of thoughts leads to overthinking due to rumination of thoughts. This leads to waste of time and energy and can lead one to dangerous conclusions of trivial matters.

So how do we stop this incessant chatter and tame the wild thought monkey? A best way is to pause and observe. Do not engage with the thought. Neither encourage not push it away. Just observe.

As soon as you put your attention to it the mind stops its wondering and is yours to work with. It just takes a second’s shift and consistent practice.

Lord Krishna also says that through practice and Detachment mind can be conquered.

The 1 second shift to emotional resilience has the exact steps to silence your mind.

What is one step that you have taken to discover the power of silence?
